How to become Catholic

What are you looking for?

Belonging, connection, hope, meaning? Not sure yet?

Whether you’re just curious to learn more about Catholics, or ready to join the Church this year, you are welcome to walk with us on the journey.

What is OCIA?

The process of becoming Catholic for adults is called OCIA, the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults. This process prepares your mind and heart to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation. Most OCIA groups begin together in the fall and receive the sacraments on Easter Vigil.

I’m at USI. Where should I attend OCIA?

If you or a friend is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, we’re partnering with St. Philip Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. You are also most welcome to reach out to any local Catholic Church (most of them have a similar program).

At St. Philip’s, OCIA meets on Sundays from 10:45am - 12pm in the St. Philip room (the lower level of the church). Contact Deacon Charlie, ckoressel@evdio.org, for more info.

Fun Fact:

OCIA used to be called “RCIA” (R stood for “Rite”). If you see RCIA instead of OCIA on a church’s website, fear not. They are the same thing!
